Dirty little secret #2 is kids from other countries are doing better than us. America is simply not educating students that are in advanced math and science classes. Most of our top students are children of immigrants. An example of one of these students is Andrei Munteanu, In 7th grade he was quoted "The math and science classes I was taking in Romania... when I was in fourth grade." There are a few rare students like Eric Stern, he was getting his Ph.D., when he was 24. Those are people that America needs, Stern was telling Friedman the reason why students are not doing math is because it is not fun.

The dirty little secret #2 that Friedman talks about is education in our country. We simply are not putting out as many advanced students in science and math. Foriegn countries are putting out many more students who took math and science in a lower grade, while our generation is more apathetic and just has no motivation towards hard work.

Dirty little secret number two is about education. In our country students are less motivated, are not taking the advanced math and science courses that other kids in other countries are taking, and have a lesser interest in the areas of math and science. Therefore other countries are putting out more science and mathematical specific workers into the world.

This secret isn't a secret at all, it's about kids in America not wanting to take harder math and science classes because they're the harder classes that are more tedious and you have to put more work into. There also isn't the same emphasis on these courses as there were back when Kennedy was president and the Cold War was relevent and the space race was in full speed mode. When the German exchange students came here last semester one of them was in my algebra II honors class and he was amazed that we were allowed to use calculators for our homework and tests. At first I was an arrogant American and figured that over there the math was so much easier there was no need for calculators, until he was able to finish one of our homework assignements in his head before any of us could with calculators. Hopefully the next leader of this country won't be a brain dead monkey and we re-establish an emphasis on math and science in schools, instead of advocating that if a child can't pass a standardized test they can't move on to the next grade. Chew on that george dubya
