In the bottom line, I learned that in China Bill Gates is like Brittany Spears. He is idolized because of the amazing things is has done in software. With that being said I feel that America is idolizing the wrong people, back in the 50's and 60's we idolized astronauts. But now we idolize drunken celebrities. Anyway, basically the rest of the chapter talks about how Indians and Chinese are killing us in sciences and mathematics. One more thing I found interesting was this "A crisis is a terrible thing to waste."

In this reading we learn that the Chinese practically idolize Bill Gates the way we idolize, as Scott puts it, drunken celebrities. His software technology and other technological genius makes him a very important person to the flat world and the Chinese realize that. Other than this, this reading just talks about how other countries are doing better than us as far as scientific and mathematic advancement goes.

Once again freidman is talking about how more and more country's are advancing in the areas of math and science quicker, faster, and better than America. Most people idolize one person or in general a status of people in general they wish to be. In America we tend to idolize the most currently talked about drunken celebrity. However in China they idolize Bill Gates for what he has accomplished with software. Maybe this is why china is advancing faster in the areas of science and math than America. I mean just look at our idols and then look at theres.

"In China today, Bill Gates is Britney Spears. In America today, Britney Spears is Britney Spears-and that is our problem." say Friedman. When he says this he means that America is looking up to the wrong people, we focus so much on celebrities that kids want to grow up and be Hannah Montana instead of the next Bill Gates, Larry Page or Sergey Brin. The Chinese vice minister of education said that china needs to get back to its roots of great inventions like gunpowder, paper, and printing; but of this time. One thing that I found very interesting is that china granted Microsoft the right to issue postdoctoral degrees to students who make it into their research program and stay for two years.

This section is Friedman continuing to talk about how America is falling so far behind places like China in the fields of sciences and mathematics. It's sort of like a high school actually in the way that we idolize the popular people and whatever they do is cool, instead of focusing on the really intelligent people who score the perfect SAT scores and have the 9.0GPA. America is like one big cliche high school.
